Circus in the City
NEW WESTMINSTER, BC—On May 21 and 22, the Massey Theatre and the Inner Ring will present Bounce-a family friendly circus-as part of the Hyack Festival.
Creatively directed by Cirque du Soleil veteran, Sandra Botnen, Bounce is an interactive show that explores the exhilarating world of circus arts like never before.
Botnen’s work was seen locally in the Avatar Circus Project, a sponsored project of the Cultural Olympiad. When asked about Bounce, Botnen explains, “Originally, we put this show on to increase awareness of and for the Boys and Girls Club of Whitehorse. It ended up being so successful that I wanted to bring it to the Lower Mainland”.
The show is designed to encourage family participation and engage people of all ages in the colourful and creative world of the circus arts.
The seven Inner Ring performers are all looking forward to the show. Nigel Wakita, a Vancouver Circus School coach and Bounce performer said, “We’re all really excited about it. There’s nothing better than performing in front of a live audience; I love entertaining people and I can’t wait to bring Bounce to New West”.
When Bounce played for the first time in Whitehorse, The Whitehorse Star wrote, “This positive and healthy environment demonstrated that Inner Ring performed as advertised, inspiring Whitehorse youth…”
This time around, the Inner Ring will be donating a portion of Bounce ticket sales to the Variety Club of BC.
Show times are: Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 8pm. Regular Admission is 29$ with special rates for students and seniors.
Tickets are available through the Massey Theatre’s online and on-site ticket center.

The show is designed to engage families in the colourful and creative world of circus arts. The cast of Bounce features seven Vancouver-based circus professionals, Ryan Mellors, Nigel Wakita, Brandon Miyazaki, Jake West, Chris Murdoch, Cam Fraser, and Jesse Pierce.
Bounce was creatively directed by Cirque du Soleil veteran, Sandra Botnen. Ms. Botnen’s work was seen locally in the Avatar Circus Project, a sponsored project of the Cultural Olympiad.
Bounce was originally put on as a fundraising production, for the Boys and Girls Club of Whitehorse, where sell out performances thrilled over 1600 audience members. “When the circus is mentioned, images of a traveling clan of performers making their animals perform outrageous feats scrolls across my mind at ease. However, in modern times, the circus industry has changed significantly into a post-modern form of alternative entertainment…” read article

Quote from the article:
Since 2004, the Vancouver Circus School has been training it’s student performers to wow the lower mainland with their contortion, unicycle, tumbling, and acrobatic acts. And due to an increasing demand for performers, the company stemmed off just over two years ago to create its first performance circus troop called Inner Ring Circus. The group, consisting of … exclusive artists and numerous freelancers, constructs what Travis Johnson, the initiator behind the circus venture, calls Inner Ring Innovations – unique shows created for each corporate, non-profit or charity organization. Up next, a journey to White Horse to perform their show entitled, Bounce.
